"Separated by One Street" is a piece of work sampled from two shopping malls in the famous commercial district of Chongqing. Raffles City Chongqing was one of the urban renewal projects completed between 2012 and 2019. In the same neighbourhood, the Zhengda Wholesale Market buildings were preserved. Despite being just one street apart, these two malls exhibit completely different consumer cultures. I used a 24mm fixed-focus lens to capture the escalators in the corridors of the malls. The mall's space and ceiling height determined the range of images I could put in the frame. The space in the Zhengda Wholesale Market appears crowded, cramped, and narrow, whereas Raffles City Chongqing is bright, grand and sublime. Finally, I placed both moving images on a real estate advertising billboard in the corridor of a building.
